Born to the islands and forged on the streets of Brisbane, Karl “The Lyrical” Smith is one of Queensland’s most distinctive live performers. He started out busking three nights a week in Fortitude Valley back in 2000, where a fellow MC christened him “The Lyrical Shaman” — a name he’s spent twenty-five years living up to.
His sound is unlike anything else on a festival bill: folk guitar and raw beatboxing fused with roots, reggae and hip hop, carried by a voice that can drop from a rapid-fire verse to a gut-punch of a chorus in a single breath. It’s music built on a Pacific island childhood spent making instruments out of cardboard boxes and plastic pipe, and it hits just as hard now as it did on the pavement.
Seven number ones on triple j Unearthed, two People’s Choice Awards at Byron Bay Bluesfest, Queensland Busker of the Year, and more than eight million streams later, the Gold Coast-based artist has shared stages with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Angus Stone and Michael Franti, and played Big Day Out, Bluesfest and Caloundra Music Festival.
