I Am Giant formed in 2008 in West Auckland, New Zealand, by Paul Matthews and drummer Shelton Woolright, later relocating operations to London. They blend alternative rock and post-grunge, with powerful melodies, heavy dynamics, and emotive vocals.
They debuted with The Horrifying Truth in 2011, which hit #2 in NZ and went Gold. Their second album Science & Survival (2014) continued their success, and their third, Life in Captivity (2018), marked a mature evolution in sound.
Over their career, I Am Giant toured extensively across Australasia, Asia, Europe, and the UK, supported major acts, and built a devoted international fanbase (often referred to as the “IAG Army”). They became known for their high-energy live shows, blending heavier rock textures with melodic hooks.
Band members have evolved over time. Founding members Matthews (bass, songwriting) and Woolright (drums) have remained constants. Vocalists and guitarists have shifted, including Ed Martin (until 2014), Ryan Redman, and Aja Timu among others.
Though the band went into a quieter period after 2018, their impact on the NZ rock scene and their international presence remains strong, with listeners drawn to their balance of heavy drive and melodic sensibility.
