Pirongia Porkers BBQ

The porkers lads take their name from their hometown of Pirongia for two of the members – Kurt & Nathan. It is the teams first year competing with reasonable results. Our last comp, 3 of 4 of our last hand ins were top 8 results considering we have only been cooking over coals and wood consistently for just over 18 months ourselves.

Two other lads that normally compete in the team are unfortunately not able to make it to Meatstock so Kurt Shirley (captain) & Nathan Attwoods wives Rebecca & Bridget will be backing the boys up and this will be their first experience of competition BBQ – What a way to start off!

There has always been an interest and limited chances in cooking with charcoal/wood fired based methods, but the real kick was Aucklands very first Meatstock in 2017. This began the purchases of low end, entry level units for Low n Slow BBQ & regular cooks during the week and on weekends. Only 12 months later after many upgrades to new gear, we are now competing & the obsession continues!

Meatstock will be only our 3rd official competition and we cant wait!

Our top tip is Low n Slow can take time (no pun intended) to achieve perfect results with consistent temps, textures & flavour. But that’s part of the fun of learning the art, so if it’s at home or competing – don’t panic & be organised.
